Water properties

What is water?

Water is a chemical compound. Each molecule of water, H2O, consists of two atoms of hydrogen bonded to one atom of oxygen.

Importance of water

Water is extremely vital. It helps the body keep a normal temperature, get rid of waste, carries nutrients, oxygen and etc through out the body, protects tissues, and organs from shock and damage according to centers for diseases control and prevention.

Polarity

Water is polar because the unequal sharing of electrons between the atoms and the unsymmetrical shape of the molecule means that a water molecule has two poles - a positive charge on the hydrogen pole (side) and a negative charge on the oxygen pole (side).

Properties of water (due to water polarity and hydrogen bonding)

Universal solvent ( dissolves most substances)

High heat capacity ( The ability of water not to change temp easily)

Cohesive ( the ability of water molecules to be attracted to other water molecules)

Adhesive ( the ability of water molecules to be attracted to other molecules of other substances)

High surface tension ( adhesion and cohesion)

ice floats (less dense as a solid than as a liquid)

how much water should you drink daily ?

About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men. About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women.
